my response was a business owner. I loved the idea of being in control of my own destiny. I had no idea at the time what that business would be. I knew I needed to attend post-secondary but had no idea what I wanted to do. I chose to take my legal assistant diploma because it offered 100% job placement. I had heard of people going to college and university and then couldn’t get a job. I knew I needed a job and to make more than minimum wage. I’m a realist! After 13 years in varying legal assistant/paralegal roles, I was still driven for more.
We spent much of my childhood moving around. I didn’t mind that much as moving was a new adventure and each home had its pros and cons. Wherever we were, we made the best of it. As an adult though, homeownership was very much something I wanted. There seemed to be a sense of pride and accomplishment in owning a home. Owning a home felt secure, it’s yours, and you can make it your own.
Investing in Real Estate, seemed like the opportunity to get ahead in this life. When my husband and I purchased our first home, we were conservative. We didn’t want to over-extend ourselves. But, it was more clear as time went on that we wanted a bit more space, a more private backyard, and a larger garage.
After a few years in the business, my Realtor® uncle discovered me on Ancestory.com. Later I learned that my biological father and one of my other uncles were homebuilders. Only an hour away no less. It was clear then that my draw to this business may have been destined after all.
We needed to level up our living! We made a list of our must-haves for our next house. We started looking online and boom. We found the one, listed our house, and put a conditional offer on our dream home subject to our house selling! It had all the space we needed and a few extras. We sold our house on the first showing! In fact, the last 3 properties we’ve sold, sold within the first week.
We don’t base our homes completely on resale but we do factor them in when we’re purchasing. Choosing a home with a functional layout that’ll appeal to many buyers is helpful. We maintain our homes during our ownership. We prep them to near perfection before photos. We’ve sold in mediocre markets, including right before Christmas during a pandemic!
